Beginner’s Guide – Daytona 24 Hours

The first 24 Hours of Daytona was held in 1966, just in time for the Ford versus Ferrari sportscar battles. It has seen the likes of Ford, Ferrari, Porsche and Lola fighting for the overall victory. The races status has fluctuated over the decades – sometimes being part of a World Championship, others being part of the national IMSA GT Championship. Since the late 90s, the event has been the opening round of the Grand Am Series and lends its name to the Daytona Prototype class.

This is the moment BMW Motorsport has been waiting for: after months of intensive development, the new BMW M8 GTE will make its race debut this weekend. The new top model for international GT racing will take to the track at the legendary 24-hour race in Daytona (USA), the opener of the 2018 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The 56th edition of the endurance classic takes place on 27th/28th January.

The No. 66 Ford GT team won the event’s GTLM class title last year and all three drivers – Joey Hand, Dirk Müller and Sébastien Bourdais – will be back to defend the win. On the other side of the garage, while the No. 67 Ford GT finished 10th, drivers Richard Westbrook (1:43.385) and Ryan Briscoe (1:43.433) recorded the two quickest lap times of the class in 2017 while sharing the car with endurance addition Scott Dixon.

THE 2018 SEASON OF THE LAMBORGHINI SUPER TROFEO TO START FROM THE MIDDLE EAST

The racing season of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo will officially start during the first weekend in February. The 2018 season of the famous one-make series for Huracán Super Trofeos will kick off from the Yas Marina Circuit, Abu Dhabi, with the first round of the Middle East series that precedes, by a few months, the start of the three continental series Europe, Asia and North America.

United Autosports adds another chapter to its already impressive nine-year racing history when the double European sports-prototype championship winning outfit competes in the Rolex 24 At Daytona as a stand-alone team for the first-time next weekend (27-28 Jan). The Anglo-American outfit enters North America’s premier sportscar race with its two Ligier JS P217 LMP2 sports-prototypes vying for overall honours in the top class and with a seven-driver squad who can boast multiple championship title success globally.
