A PAIR OF TOP TEN RESULTS FOR MERCEDES-AMG IN THE NURBURGRING 24 HOURS

Mercedes-AMG fell short off of the high goals it had set itself for this year’s ADAC TOTAL 24h-Rennen. The season highlight at the Nürburgring was marked by extreme weather conditions that led to retirements for the favourites including the race-leading Mercedes-AMG GT3 cars and resulted into the race being suspended over nine hours. Once the racing had resumed, Patrick Assenheimer (GER), Dominik Baumann (AUT), Maro Engel and Dirk Müller (both GER) of the Mercedes-AMG Team HRT AutoArenA finished in eighth place, the best result for the GT3s from Affalterbach. The HRT team’s sister car with Nico Bastian (GER), Yelmer Buurman (NED), Hubert Haupt (GER) and Philip Ellis (SUI) behind the wheel finished in ninth place. In the SP8T category, Black Falcon Team Textar celebrated second place in class with its Mercedes-AMG GT4.

SECOND PLACE FOR AUDI SPORT CUSTOMER RACING AT THE NURBURGING

Fighting for its sixth overall victory in the turbulent 48th running of the Nürburgring 24 Hours, Audi Sport customer racing had to admit defeat by just a few seconds. Audi Sport drivers Mirko Bortolotti, Christopher Haase and Markus Winkelhock in the Audi R8 LMS crossed the finish line in the most adverse conditions in the Eifel region as runners-up. They achieved this result as a squad of three after their team-mate Robin Frijns, who had originally been planned to race with them in Audi Sport Team Car Collection, was unable to compete due to an infection with the common cold.

Nick Catsburg (NED), Alexander Sims (GBR) and Nick Yelloly (GBR) alternated at the wheel in an eventful and wet race, which was interrupted for roughly nine hours in the night due to heavy rain. The trio fought back strongly on Sunday to earn BMW’s first overall victory since 2010. At the end of a nerve-racking climax, Catsburg crossed the finish line 15.452 seconds ahead of the second-placed Audi. BMW Team Schnitzer completed the podium in third place, with drivers Augusto Farfus (BRA), Jens Klingmann (GER), Martin Tomczyk (GER) and Sheldon van der Linde (RSA).

MERCEDES-AMG READY TO RUN IN THE NURBURGRING 24 HOURS

This Saturday afternoon, the ADAC TOTAL 24h-Rennen as the endurance racing season highlight for Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing gets underway. The initial position for a repeated success after 2013 and 2016 is very good: next to pole position for the #4 HRT Mercedes-AMG GT3, four further GT3s from Affalterbach will be lining up on the first five rows of the grid. During the race, Alexander Bodo will be facing a challenging job. The chief strategist in the Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing team will be coordinating all the tactical interests from the operations centre. Given the changeable weather conditions that are to be expected, the right timing of the driver changes, fuel stops and driver changes in particular will be playing a major role. In the Mercedes-AMG Race Base, Bodo will be supported, among others, by weather experts who are on duty day and night. For everyone involved, anticipation for the race start is huge, even though spectators on site are sadly missed. To greet the fans watching from home, Mercedes-AMG has placed several fan banners along the Nordschleife that are regularly captured by the cameras. Moreover, the Customer Racing website (customerracing.mercedes-amg.com) provides a live stream with exclusive additional features.

GOOD QUALIFYING FOR THE BMW M6 GT3 ON THE NORDSCHLEIFE

BMW teams secured promising starting positions with the BMW M6 GT3 in Friday’s Top Qualifying on the eve of the Nürburgring 24 Hours (GER). Nick Yelloly (GBR) and Augusto Farfus (BRA) qualified fifth and sixth for ROWE Racing and BMW Team Schnitzer, meaning they start the race from row three. With some stretches of the circuit wet and some dry, qualifying became something of a tyre lottery. Marco Wittmann (GER, ROWE Racing) and Christian Krognes (NOR, Walkenhorst Motorsport) finished eighth and ninth to claim their places in the top ten. Henry Walkenhorst (GER) was 16th in the AM car run by Walkenhorst Motorsport.

DISAPPOINTING FINAL QUALIFYING FOR PORSCHE AT THE NURBURGRING

Porsche has made it into the new Top Qualifying for the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring, which is limited to 30 vehicles, with all seven customer-run 911 GT3 R racers. In the first heat of the two-part final qualifying session, Dennis Olsen achieved second in the individual time trial with the 500+hp 911 fielded by the KCMG squad. Facing very difficult track conditions with rain setting in, he made the best use of the first of his two laps and missed out on topping the timesheets by a mere quarter of a second. This allowed the Norwegian to take part in the second qualifying segment. However, he had to park the vehicle, which he shares with Timo Bernhard, Jörg Bergmeister (both Germany) and Earl Bamber (New Zealand) due to problems during the warm-up lap. As the best-placed 911 GT3 R, Frikadelli Racing’s No. 30 entry heads into the 24-hour race on Saturday at 3.30 pm local time from P14. Sharing the cockpit are qualifying driver Alex Müller (Germany), Klaus Abbelen, Robert Renauer (both Germany) and Norbert Siedler (Austria). The Porsche, which contests the Pro-Am class, had already made it into the top-17 session after scoring good results in the Nürburgring Endurance Series (NLS).
