Marco Wittmann claimed pole position for the DTM race at the Nürburgring on Sunday. Thus, the 27-year-old BMW driver once again underlined his strong qualifying performance this season. On his fastest lap (1m20.936s), Wittmann was the only driver to post a sub 1m21s time and ended up ahead of the two Mercedes-AMG drivers Paul Di Resta and Robert Wickens, who were second and third respectively. Lucas Auer, who dominated qualifying at the circuit in the Eifel in the past three years, didn’t do any better than fourth place and took the final slot on the second row of the grid.

BMW and Mercedes-AMG decided the battle for the best starting grid positions in dry conditions among themselves. Tom Blomqvist, Timo Glock and Augusto Farfus ended up in fifth to seventh place. Gary Paffett (Mercedes-AMG), Bruno Spengler (BMW) and Edoardo Mortara (Mercedes-AMG) rounded out the top ten. Jamie Green was the best-placed driver with an Audi RS 5 DTM. The Brit was 0.550 seconds short of Wittmann’s fastest time.

Quotes after the Qualifying

Marco Wittmann (BMW, 1st place): “Today, the most difficult thing was getting the tyres to their working temperature with an outside temperature of ten degrees. One can always be happy with a pole position. At the end, we did everything right. Today, there was no rain gamble and no poker games. I am happy to be in first place. Yesterday, I was on the front row and today, I am starting even further up to the front. That is an optimal situation. Now, I hope that the rain will stay away, or that conditions are really clear.”

Paul Di Resta (Mercedes-AMG, 2nd place): “That was a decent qualifying. The result shows that you can do a good job when you work hard. We are in a good position. We will do our utmost to score another podium finish.”
