Mattias Ekström retires from DTM for good. Last Monday in Salzburg, after 17 successful years on the grid of the popular touring-car series, the Swede publicly announced his decision in a press conference. A decision that is particularly regretted by the other long-term DTM drivers. DTM.com visited the paddock and asked other drivers for statements.

Dream start for World RX Champion Ekström

The 2017 FIA World Rallycross Championship could not have been off to a better start from Audi and EKS’s point of view. The season opener at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya saw Mattias Ekström triumph. In the final, the reigning world champion relegated Timo Scheider (D) and Andreas Bakkerud (N) to positions two and three. This victory immediately puts Ekström back at top of the drivers’ standings. In the teams’ classification, team world champions EKS are in the top spot tied on points with Team PSRX Volkswagen Sweden.

Sharper look for new Audi RS 5 DTM

About a month before the DTM season opens, Audi is presenting the liveries of the six Audi RS 5 DTM cars. The engineers at the Audi motorsport department prepared the race cars in the past two weeks together with the teams. From Monday to Thursday next week (April 3 to 6) the new DTM cars will participate in final pre-season tests at Hockenheim.

Mattias Ekström will again be competing in a dual role in 2017. Following remarkable years in the DTM and two titles with Audi, the Swede is determined to claim the top spot now in the new, more than 500-HP Audi RS 5 DTM too. And as the reigning World Rallycross Champion he has only one aim in the up-and-coming racing series as well: to win the title again this year.
