Sebastian Landy (Great Falls, Va.) had an up and down two races last weekend in the IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama doubleheader at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama.

He was able to qualify the Alex Job Racing prepared No.49 Porsche 911 GT car in fifth for both races. In race one, he had contact early and recorded a sixth place finish. In race two, in the rain, he was running in the top six when he made a pass and had contact which sent him off the track and relegated him to being classified in 13th.

“The whole weekend for us was a tricky one,” Landy said. “The overall grip level throughout the weekend was low, and that meant we had a lot of work to do in order to get the most out of the car. Qualifying went alright. The competition in this series is so close that often it can come down to tenths and half tenths that can be the difference between pole and eighth, so I was happy with two fifth place results in qualifying. I felt that even if we left a tiny bit on the table in terms of overall lap time, we would have a good race car.

For race one, it was a battle from the drop of the green flag, and unfortunately I lost some ground at the start. That was difficult to make up later in the race. Jim Bell, and all of the guys at Alex Job Racing gave me a consistent and quick race car, but at the end of the day I felt that I wasn’t able to get the most out of it in terms of finishing position. Passing is always a tricky thing to do at Barber, but I knew that we had a good car and I was looking forward to Sunday’s race, which was going to be in the wet.”

Landy started fifth for Sunday’s race as well, this time in the rain.

“If race one was a battle from the get go, race two was more like chaos! I started fifth again, and after getting a much better start than the day before I was hit by another competitor on the first lap, which impacted the car’s handling and cost me a few spots that I then had to fight to gain back,” he continued. “Like it often happens with rain races, survival is the name of the game, and trying to stay out of trouble and take advantage of any opportunity that comes along is important. We ended up going under yellow with a few minutes left in the race, and so I knew that everything would come down to getting a good restart and trying to capitalize as much as possible. I passed two in the first half of the lap after the restart, and I was looking to make a pass for fourth when I was hit from behind by another competitor, which unfortunately spun me around and ended my race early. That wasn’t how I wanted to end the weekend, especially considering all of the work that the crew had put in, but that’s racing sometimes.

Overall I’d have liked to come away from the weekend with the points that our pace deserved, but I know that we’ve made a lot of progress in terms of our understanding of the chassis, and that we’re going to be in a good place to attack the upcoming weekend at COTA [Circuit of the Americas].”

The IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama series will travel to the Circuit of the Americas May 4-6.
