Di Grassi Sets Fastest Ever Lap at Punta del Este in FP2

The Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler driver, who will start in the theoretically less advantageous Group 1 in qualifying, posted the fastest ever lap time at the recently re-surfaced Uruguayan circuit with a best lap of 1:13.672.

The Brazilian’s time was 0.408 seconds quicker than Sam Bird’s best in one of his DS Virgin DSV-03 cars.

Mitch Evans continued to show good pace in his Panasonic Jaguar Racing car and placed third, just 0.055 seconds slower than Bird.

NIO’s Oliver Turvey set the pace in the early phase of the 30-minute session but was bumped back to fourth position.

Turvey was ahead of Nicolas Prost’s Renault e.dams car, while points leader Jean-Eric Vergne was sixth for Techeetah.

Remarkably the top ten featured nine different teams with only Dragon Racing having both its drivers outside of the first ten positions.

The session was shortened after a red flag for an accident at Turn 15 which saw Tom Blomqvist’s Andretti car hit the wall.

The British driver appeared to suffer a suspension failure at the fast chicane after previous contact with the wall earlier in the lap.

The delay meant eight minutes of running were lost in the session which was used for qualifying simulations at the full 200 kW power modes.

Apart from Blomqvist’s incident the session was relatively incident-free with just some drivers heavily riding kerbs as they simulated full power qualifying runs.

The qualifying session is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. local time.
