Sebastien Buemi headed the time charts in Free Practice 1, the first timed ABB FIA Formula E Championship session ahead of today’s Punta del Este E-Prix.

The Renault e.dams driver set a best time of 1:14.536 in his Renault Z.E 17, eclipsing Mitch Evans by 0.343 seconds in a session which saw drivers explore the limits of the Uruguayan seaside circuit.

Buemi shrugged off an accident during the session which damaged his rear wing to be comfortably quickest on the track at which he has a 100 percent strike rate of wins.

Evans was on course to beat Buemi’s lap in the final stages of the 45-minute session but encountered traffic in the final two corners.

The Panasonic Jaguar Racing driver had just returned to the track after he came to a standstill at the pit lane entry and had to have his Jaguar pushed back in to his pit box.

Lucas di Grassi placed third after initially setting the pace in the early stages of the running as he and teammate Daniel Abt race a re-homologated inverter component in their Audi e-tron FE04 cars this weekend.

Alex Lynn placed fourth in his DS Virgin DSV-03 just ahead of championship leader Jean-Eric Vergne.

On-track incidents were plentiful in the session with NIO’s Luca Filippi and Mahindra’s Felix Rosenqvist both spinning at Turn 8, while Maro Engel and trip down escape road in his Venturi VM200-FE.

Free Practice 2 will get underway at 10:30 a.m. local time.
