CHARLOTTE, N.C. — And then there were 12.

With Ryan Newman, Austin Dillon, Kasey Kahne and Kurt Busch eliminated for from the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs at Dover (Del.) Int’l Speedway, the round of 12 kicks off this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Martin Truex Jr. will enter Sunday’s Bank of America 500 leading the playoff race with 59 playoff points. Truex has won five races this season, including the playoff opener at Chicagoland Speedway.

Kyle Busch, who won the second and third races of the playoffs at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and Dover, trails Truex by 18 points heading into the 500-mile race at the 1.5-mile superspeedway.

While Truex and Busch are the only drivers to win playoff races so far this season, Kyle Larson enters Charlotte third in the standings with 34 points.

While Truex and Busch both handle Toyotas, Larson drives a Chevrolet and fourth-place Brad Keselowski, who has 20 playoff points, has his Team Penske Ford fourth in the standings.

Seven-time Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson has 17 playoff points, while former champion Kevin Harvick has 15 points.

Rounding out the field of 12 drivers still eligible to win the championship are Denny Hamlin, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott, Matt Kenseth and Jamie McMurray.

After Sunday’s race at Charlotte, the round of 12 continues Oct. 15 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway and Oct. 22 at Kansas Speedway.
