NASCAR Next Driver Repeats As Pinty’s Winner At Wyant Group

July 27, 2017 – 3:25am

SASKATOON, Sask. – Wyant Group Raceway is a track that means something to Cayden Lapcevich.

The NASCAR Next driver scored his first NASCAR Pinty’s Series win at the Saskatoon track last year en route to his record-setting championship season one year ago. It appears he wants to keep making memories.

The Grimsby, Ontario, driver passed D.J. Kennington on Lap 77 and went on to win Race No. 2 of the Velocity Prairie Thunder Twin 100s Wednesday night. It was his second win of the season and fifth of his career. And more importantly, moved him back into championship contention

Lapcevich had already scored a podium finish earlier in the night after rebounding from a spin to finish third in the first 100-lap event. He started the nightcap fifth as the starting lineup was set for the second race by the fastest lap recorded during the first race.

The NASCAR Next driver quickly moved his No. 76 Fastline Motorsports Dodge into the top three midway through the race. He was able to get past Kennington late in the race and pull away for the victory by .241 seconds.

Kennington started from the pole following a runner-up finish in the opening race of the night.

Alex Labbe followed up his win in Race No. 1 with a third-place finish, while championship points leader Kevin Lacroix was fourth.

Lacroix maintained his two-point edge over Labbe in the championship race, while Lapcevich moved up to third. The defending series champion is 26 points out of the lead, and holds a four-point advantage on Kennington and five on L.P. Dumoulin.

Dumoulin completed the top five in Wednesday’s second race. Donald Theetge was sixth, followed by Andrew Ranger and Mark Dilley. Alex Tagliani recovered from finishing last in the opener after suffering accident damage to take ninth in the second race, while Gary Klutt rounding out the top 10.

The NASCAR Pinty’s Series concludes its annual western swing visiting Edmonton International Raceway with the Luxxur 300 on Saturday.
