FIM MotoGP World Championship organizer Dorna Sports has announced the launch of an all-electric motorbike racing series to form part of the MotoGP support package.

The series, named the FIM Enel MotoE World Cup, will get underway in 2019, and was announced in Rome on Tuesday.

It will feature zero-emissions, all-electric motorbikes which will compete at five European MotoGP rounds with a scope to expanding to become a worldwide series in the future.

Races are expected to be ten laps in duration with a total of 18 bikes on track.

Each of the seven privateer teams currently competing in MotoGP will receive two bikes while a further four entries will be provided for teams from the Moto2 and Moto3 support series who chose to enter.

The series will get underway with an official test at Circuito de Jerez in Feb. 2019.
